Imagine boarding a commercial flight with a First Class ticket, then discovering you have the cabin to yourself. It might feel like you have accidentally booked a private jet. For Steve Hui, it is the kind of travel story that makes you wonder what else is possible with frequent flyer points.
Known as The Points Whisperer, Steve is a former Macquarie accountant and founder of The iFLYflat Flights Club. He has made a career of helping travellers think more strategically about the points they earn through everyday and business spending. His premise is simple: the trip that seems out of reach might already be sitting quietly in your points balance.
On The Wanderlist podcast, Steve joins Wanderlust Union founder Sophie Baker to talk about the flights, places and experiences that have shaped his little black book of travel. The conversation begins with points, but quickly goes somewhere more interesting: what happens when you start treating travel as a possibility to plan for?
Can everyday spending take you closer to Business or First Class?
Steve’s approach is to make each dollar work twice: once for what it buys and again for where the points it earns might take him. He discusses how he thinks about credit card points and airline reward programs, and why understanding their value can change the way you plan a trip.
For him, a flight is part of the experience, not simply the way to get there. An evening at the Emirates onboard bar or a journey in a Qatar Airways Qsuite starts long before take-off, with a decision about where to direct your spending and which experience is worth saving points for. Steve explains why the right American Express points strategy could make a particular flight feel more attainable than you might assume.
Steve Hui’s little black book of travel
The episode also reveals where Steve returns when he has the freedom to go almost anywhere. Croatia has earned a lasting place in his little black book: it is a destination that continues to reveal more with every visit. He shares where he goes to disappear completely, and why some trips stay with him well after he comes home.
Then there is Antarctica. Steve describes what the destination is really like through two senses that rarely make it into travel stories: sound and smell. His account of a penguin-filled island is wonderfully vivid, and his time there left him with unfinished business.
There is plenty of practical curiosity in this conversation for anyone who has looked at a Business or First Class seat and wondered whether it could ever be theirs. There is also a reminder of why we travel in the first place: to reach places that surprise us, and to experience them in ways we could never have planned from home.
